Baghdad, August 29: At least 20 innocent civilians were killed and28 others were injured after a car explosion took place in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The most dangerous terrorist group Islamic State has taken the responsibility of the blast.
Notably, a car packed with explosives blew up at the wholesale Jamila market in Baghdad’s Shiite district of Sadr City killing 20 civilians while injuring 28 others. The casualties were evacuated to two hospitals in Sadr City. According to the official sources, the death toll is expected to rise further as many are critically injured. Members of the security forces were among the victims.
Islamic State terrorist organization quickly claimed responsibility in an online statement on its media arms, the Aamaq news agency. Meanwhile, Hussein Kadhim, a 35-year-old, who is a porter said that it was a thunderous explosion. “It sounds that the security situation is still uncontrollable and I’m afraid that such bombings will make a comeback,” he added.
The explosion took place at a time when US-backed Iraqi forces are in final stages of recapturing the northern town of Tal Afar from Daesh, about 150 km from Syria’s border. However, similar kind of bomb blasts took place earlier also. In the month of March this year, 48 people were killed in a series car bombing that took place in Shia area of Bayaa in the south of Baghdad.
