Stronger sanctions pressure on North Korea could be "counterproductive and dangerous": Russian FM Lavrov

Moscow, August 31: Whereas US and Japan are emphasizing on the need of tougher sanctions on North Korea, Russia considers further strengthening of sanctions pressure on North Korea "counterproductive and dangerous." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had phone talks with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
In the increased North Korea threat the leaders from Japan US wants to take Russia more important role. After North Korea’s latest missile launch, United Nations Security Council condemned the act unanimously. Russia supported UNSC’s that North Korea should curtail banned programs.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russia Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Robert Tillerson had a telephonic conversation on American initiative. In the conversation, Lavrov did not support the idea of getting distant from political and diplomatic ways to solve the problem. He urged to avoid a military solution to the crisis.
"Lavrov again emphasized the absence of alternatives to political and diplomatic ways to overcome tensions on the Korean peninsula and the need to refrain from any military steps that could lead to unpredictable consequences… Russia believes that further increase of sanctions pressure on North Korea is counterproductive and dangerous," the ministry said in a statement.
