Washington, August 4: Former Australian Open juniors winner Yuki Bhambri after upsetting defending champion Gael Monfils of France, easily registered a comprehensive victory over Guido Pella of Argentina to enter quarter-finals of the ongoing Citi Open in Washington DC on Friday.
Yuki Bhambri who is in good defeated Argentina’s Guido Pella in a three-set 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that lasted for two hours and 10 minutes. Though Yuki lost the first set with a mere difference bounced back in the second set and registered a win by 6-3.
After winning the second set, Yuki’s confidence was on high and won the third set more comfortably. The 25-year-old Yuki will now lock horns with 15-seeded Kevin Anderson who tamed Dominic Thiem of Austria for a place in the semi-finals.
Bhambri, who has struggled with injuries throughout his career, is a former junior World No. 1 and won the Australian Open boys' singles in 2009 when he was 17 years old. The win brings Bhambri back into the top 200; he is projected to finish around the 150 mark if he has a strong finish at the Washington Open.
