Calcutta High Court directs to form town-vending committee to regulate Hawkers

Calcutta, August 5: In most of the metropolitan cities Hawker problem is a very major issue. The crowd management, transport often gets affected due to Hawker problem. Kolkata, the Bengal capital has been suffering from this problem since a long time. Hence on Friday,  Town Vending Committee has been instructed to form by Calcutta High Court to regulate Hawkers in the city.

"This is our ultimate order. If the committee is not constituted in 12 weeks, the court will have to take coercive steps," acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre said. Hence as per the court order, State Government has to take some effective steps in 12 weeks only.

Due to over activity of Hawker on footpaths Pedestrian can’t even walk on boulevards. The number of Hawkers has only increased over time. State Government, Calcutta municipality sometimes come with police vans to overthrow them with their ingredients but never could come up with permanent solutions. It only increased the misery of poor Hawkers.

Back in 2014, the Centre had enacted the street vendors act to control hawkers. The instruction was for cities across the country. But a committee did not come up since then.
