Vice President elect M Venkaiah Naidu to assume office on 11th

New Delhi, Aug 6: Senior BJP leader and NDA nominee M Venkaiah Naidu will be the next Vice-President of India. Registering a comprehensive victory, the veteran leader got 516 votes out of the total 771 votes cast while UPA candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi polled only 244 votes. Of the total 771 votes polled, 11 votes were found to be invalid. According to Returning Officer Shemsher K Sharif Voting for the Vice-Presidential Election ended with a total poll percentage of 98.21 per cent.

The 68-year-old BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh will replace the incumbent Hamid Vice-President Ansari. He will be the 13th person to hold the second highest Constitutional post. Naidu will also preside over the Rajya Sabha as the Chairman. After Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (2002-2007) Naidu will be the second BJP leader to become vice-president. Before his elevation to the post of Vice-President, he has served as the minister for information and broadcasting and housing and urban affairs in the Modi government along with the Parliamentary Affairs portfolio.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Venkaiah Naidu on being elected as country's next Vice President. In a tweet, Prime Minister said, “Naidu will serve the nation as a diligent and dedicated Vice President, committed to the the goal of nation building.”

Naidu will be sworn-in as the new Vice-President of India on August 11.
