Chandigarh, September 1: The long awaiting decision on the Jat reservation comes from Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Court on Friday referred the matter back to the backward class commission. Till then, Jat quota will remain on hold. The commission has to submit its report by March 31.

National Commission for Backward Classes has to collect adequate data till March 31. Previously state government defended the Haryana Backward Classes (Reservation in services and admission in educational institutions) Act 2016 which was later stayed by the court. It was challenged on the ground that law was contrary to the basic structure of the Constitution and exceeded the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court.

The Jat, Jat Sikh, Muslim-Jat, Bishnoi, Ror and Tyagi communities who eagerly waited for the decision will definitely be disappointed with the decision. The Jats constitute 26% of Haryana’s population. Last year February, in demand of reservation the violent protest left 30 people dead and over 200 injured.

“The court has directed the state government present the Backward Class Commission data collected by it, else the commission will collect data on basis of which percentage to which extent reservation is to be granted to be determined,” Haryana Additional Advocate General Lokesh Singhal told news agency ANI.
