Japan seeks Chinese cooperation to adopt new UN sanctions on N. Korea

Tokyo, September 1: Amid growing, North Korea tension, Japan and its ally US have been emphasizing on China and Russia help to solve the issue. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono asked his Chinese counterpart to help for adopting new U.N. sanctions on N. Korea. The ministers had a telephonic conversation.

Japan is extremely worried about North Korea’s “unprecedented threat” as its latest missile flew over Japan’s island Hokkaido. Japan’s defense ministry also sought a record amount of budget for the anti-missile defense system. UNSC instantly condemned and Japan, US agreed to put tougher sanctions on North Korea. Following that, the request came.

As per Japanese Foreign Ministry, the conversation was for 40 minutes. In the conversation, the Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers reaffirmed the common goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. The leaders agreed to keep close communication, including at the United Nations.

Regarding sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry told the tougher sanctions can have bad consequences. Sergei Lavrov said the "counterproductive and dangerous" during his telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
