Kathmandu, September 10: India on Saturday clinched the 2nd South Asian Basketball, SABA, Under - 16 Championship title after registering a commanding win over Bhutan. Indian team dominated their opposition in the whole tournament and remained unbeaten in its all four matches and accumulated 8 points.
Notably, Indian team defeated Bhutan by 131-50 in its last league match at Kathmandu. India claimed the third quarter 41-10 and took the final one 30-12 to maintain their winning run in the five-team competition. Prince Pal Singh, who top scored with 20 points for India, was adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament.
Bangladesh who was the winner of last year version this time finished second after gathering seven points. Bhutan and Maldives wrapped up the tournament in fourth and fifth places respectively while host Nepal finished third. In the last day match, Gelchen Sherpa contributed highest 25 points for Nepali team to record an easy win over Maldives.
The South Asian Basketball, SABA, Under - 16 Championship was played in a round robin league format. Also, India has now qualified for 2017 International Basketball Federation, FIBA, Under-16 Asian Championship to be played in Malaysia later this year. Interestingly, India had not participated in the previous 2015 edition.
