New Delhi, September 10: Noted jurist Ram Jethmalani today alleged that the present NDA government has “let down” the nation like the previous UPA dispensation.
Noted jurist Ram Jethmalani, 94, has announced his retirement from over seven-decade-long career as an advocate.
Announcing his retirement, Jethmalani, who was Law Minister in NDA govt headed by A B Vajpayee lambasted upon the previous and the current governments saying both have let down the nation very badly.
“It is the duty of the members of the bar and all good citizens to rise to this great calamity,” he said, adding that they should do their best to see that those in positions of power are shown the exit door as soon as possible.
“I want to do some important work in my life. I want to save India from corrupt politicians. I will be ready for legal assistance to any lawyer who comes to me, I want to fight against corrupt people”, Jethmalani told LiveLaw.
He was speaking at a function organised by apex bar body, the Bar Council of India, to felicitate new Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra.
“I am here just to tell you I am retiring from the profession but I am taking on a new role as long as I am alive. I wish to combat the corrupt politicians that have been brought into the position of power and I hope the condition of India will take good shape,” Jethmalani said.
Earlier this week, Jethmalani had informed the Supreme Court, while mentioning a service matter to Justice Kurian Joseph, that it was his last case and he would not take up any more legal case. Jethmalani, Rajya Sabha member from Bihar, is known as one of the highest paid lawyers in the Apex Court.
Jethmalani has a number of high-profile defence cases to his credit as a lawyer – people involved in market scams (Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh), and a host of gangsters and smugglers including the British citizen Daisy Angus who was acquitted of hashish smuggling after serving five years in jail.
Jethmalani defended L. K. Advani in the Hawala scam. He was in the news for taking up the defence of Manu Sharma, prime accused in the Jessica Lall murder case; however, he failed to get Manu Sharma acquitted.
Recently, Jethmalani quit as Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s lawyer in the defamation cases filed against him by Union minister Arun Jaitley, according to media reports. Media reports say that Jethmalani has asked Kejriwal to settle his legal bills, amounting to more than Rs 2 crore.
