Life in war and camps: Tokyo to host UNHCR Refugee Film Festival

Tokyo, September 10: Refugee problem is a worldwide issue different countries are facing right now. Thousands of people have to be relocated unwillingly due to poverty, natural disaster, violence, terrorism, civil war. Tokyo will host the UNHCR Refugee Film Festival 2017 which will feature a collection of dramas and documentaries about refugees.

United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Representation in Japan and Japan for UNHCR is organizing the festival. The 12th festival will show 13th titles which were selected from roughly 100 candidates. "There is a tendency to think of refugees as a difficult problem, so we would definitely like young people to take an interest -- even a little bit," said a representative of one of the festival organizers.

Syria’s civil war has produced a large number of refugees. One of the documentaries "Born in Syria" directed by Hernan Zin will be shown. The documentary tells a story of seven children on their way from Syria to Europe. Along with this, there are various ranges of films.

Screen work has been divided in six category- Voices of women and children; Life in war and camps; Power of sport and art, Unknown heroes, peaceful co-existence. “The UNHCR Refugee Film Festival” was started in order to raise awareness of the issue among as many Japanese people as possible.
