India wraps up Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships with 37 medals including 23 gold

Canberra, September 10: Indian contingent wraps up the Commonwealth Youth, Junior & Senior Weightlifting Championships with a whopping total of 37 medals including 23 gold. Notably, on the fifth and final day of the Championship which was held in Gold Coast, Australia, India bagged two gold medals while one silver and two bronze.


Also in these five days of championships, Indians created 34 new records. Pardeep Singh qualified for next year's Commonwealth Games with a gold medal. He finished on the top of the podium in the 105 kilogram category after lifting 147 kilograms in the snatch and 195 kilograms in clean & jerk for a total of 342 kilograms.

Pardeep also overhauled the national senior record in the snatch event. On the other side, in the men's junior division 105 kilogram category, Lovepreet Singh finished with a gold medal with a total effort of 325 kilograms while Tejpal Singh Sandhu claimed a bronze. Gurdeep Singh, however, settled for a bronze medal, also created a new record in the snatch section. In the junior women plus 90-kilogram category, Purnima Pandey clinched a silver.

Earlier, Muthupandi Raja, Erra Deexitha and Deepak Lather clinched the gold medal for India and made their country proud. Muthupandi Raja won a gold medal in 62kg Youth Boys section with a total lift of 260 kg. He also won a silver medal in 62kg Junior Men category with his total lift of 260kg, while, Erra Deexitha won a gold in 58kg junior women's section with a total lift of 167kg.

Deepak Lather gave the best performance and clinched three medals. He won a gold medal in youth boys' and junior men's section in 69kg body weight categories and a bronze in senior men's section in 69kg category with a total lift of 295kg.

Saraswati Rout bagged a bronze medal in 58kg senior women's section who lifted a total of 179kg. Vandna Gupta then won a bronze medal in senior women's 63kg category. Also, P Umeshwori clinched two silver medals each in youth girls' and junior women's 63kg categories.

Guru Raja won 56 kg senior bronze medal with a total lift of 246 kg. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won women's 48kg senior gold with a total lift of 189kg. Santoshi Matsa wins a silver medal in 53 kg category with a total lift of 194 kg, while, Sanjita Khumukcham Chanu won gold in 53 kg category with a total lift of 195kg.
