Moscow, September 10: In the local election which is going to be held on today, Moscow municipality will catch high attention opposition candidates are hoping for a strong showing there. This election is for selecting local and regional councils and governors i.e. 16 heads of regions, as well as the legislative assembly lawmakers in six Russian federal subjects. This is the last major voting before March’s Presidential election.
Sergei Sobyanin, the city mayor has lost its popularity among Muscovites. “People still support Putin, but Sobyanin is really unpopular now,” Vasily Dikaryev, a researcher at Moscow State University says. “People are fed up with the disruption caused by construction projects, the dust, and the traffic jams.”
"Russia is a centralized country. Winning Moscow might have serious consequences. We're living on a volcano and we don't know what will happen tomorrow. We never know when the system will collapse and everything will change," Aleksandra Rastorguyeva, a candidate backed by the opposition Yabloko party says.
