Moscow, September 10: In the local election which is going to be held on today, Moscow municipality will catch high attention opposition candidates are hoping for a strong showing there. This election is for selecting local and regional councils and governors i.e. 16 heads of regions, as well as the legislative assembly lawmakers in six Russian federal subjects. This is the last major voting before March’s Presidential election.

Though oppositions have high hopes for a good result in Moscow municipality, more than 90 per cent of the seats at Moscow’s local councils are held by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party. This is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sergei Sobyanin, the city mayor has lost its popularity among Muscovites. “People still support Putin, but Sobyanin is really unpopular now,” Vasily Dikaryev, a researcher at Moscow State University says. “People are fed up with the disruption caused by construction projects, the dust, and the traffic jams.”

"Russia is a centralized country. Winning Moscow might have serious consequences. We're living on a volcano and we don't know what will happen tomorrow. We never know when the system will collapse and everything will change," Aleksandra Rastorguyeva, a candidate backed by the opposition Yabloko party says.
