New York, September 19: On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, Ivanka Trump the advisor of US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and held a meeting. During this meet, Minister Sushma and Ivanka discussed issues relating to women empowerment and the latter's forthcoming visit to India.
The Indian Embassy in a tweet posted a picture of Minister Sushma Swaraj and Ivanka’s meeting and said, both discussed issues relating to women empowerment and the latter's forthcoming visit to India. However, Swaraj's meeting Ivanka came as a bit of a surprise.
After the meeting, Ivanka posted an image of meeting and said that she was honoured to meet Swaraj, whom she called "accomplished and charismatic". "We had a great discussion on women's entrepreneurship, the upcoming #GES2017 and workforce development in the US and India," Ivanka added in another tweet.
Importantly, India and the United States will co-host the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in Hyderabad from November 28 to 30. The GES is an annual gathering of emerging entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders from around the world.
Earlier, on the day, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had a Ministerial Trilateral meet with US Secretary of State Tillerson and Japanese FM Kono and emphasized on the need for ensuring freedom of navigation, respect for international law and peaceful resolution of disputes. Minister Sushma also met a number of world leaders as she kicked off her diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Minister Sushma also met leaders from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Tunisia, Latvia, the UAE, Bahrain and Denmark. During her week-long stay here, the minister is expected to hold about 20 bilateral and trilateral meetings with leaders attending the session. She will address the UNGA session on Saturday.
