Born on the 28th of September in 1929 Indore, she was initially named Hema. Her parents later changed it to Lata, after a female character in one of her father's favourite plays, Bhaaw Bandhan. She inherited her blissful and soul-touching voice from her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, who was a classical singer and theatre actor. She was one of Deenanath ji's five children and was the eldest child in the family. Her siblings Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar, just like her, have also been remarkable as singers. In her childhood days, this legendary singer was an actress too.
