Washington, September 3: Star Indian Tennis players Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna registered a comprehensive win over their opponents in their respective matches in New York on Saturday to advance to the US Open.
Earlier in the day, in the Women's Double, fourth seed Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng of China defeated the Slovak pair of Jana Cepelova and Magdalena Rybarikova by 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted for two hours and 13 minutes in the second round. The Indo-China pair will next take on a Romanian-Spanish combine of Sorana Cirstea and Sara Sorribes Tormo for a place in the quarterfinals.
On the other side, in the Mixed doubles, French Open champions Rohan Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski registered a hard fight win over the British-Finnish pairing of Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen by 6-4, 4-6, 13-11 in their opener in an hour and 17 minutes to advance to a second round. The Indo-Canadian mixed doubles seventh seeds will face American-Spanish combination of Nicholas Monroe and Maria Jose Martínez Sanchez in the second round.
India's Leander Paes and Purav Raja sailed into the men's doubles second round. Veteran Paes and Raja thrashed Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki 6-1, 6-3. Paes and Raja will face the Russian team of Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev in the next round.
