Japan PM Abe to visit Russia; Tokyo expects boost in bilateral relation

Tokyo, September 4: Expecting to boost the bilateral relation between Japan and Russia, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Russia from Wednesday. Shinzo Abe will have talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Russia's Vladivostok. This will be third Abe-Putin meet of this year.

After North Korea’s sixth nuclear test the leaders already had a telephonic conversation. Now Abe hopes to have "frank dialogue" with Putin on related issues. As like the whole nation of Japan expects, Abe has expressed his wish to discuss on disputed Kuril Islands issue. They will also discuss joint economic activities and crucial visits by formers residents there. Tokyo hopes the discussions will lead to the resolved point of this long conflict over the territorial dispute.

“We hope that during the current visit to Vladivostok, the results of the first year of such cooperation will be summarized while the visit would give momentum to the development of Russian-Japanese relations in all areas," Japanese ambassador to Russia Toyohisa Kozuki told.

A Japanese-Russian peace treaty may also be discussed during Shinzo Abe’s two-day visit. "Putin and Abe will very likely discuss joint economic activity on the four islands as well as humanitarian actions for former inhabitants of the islands," Kozuki said.
