New York, September 4: Indian Tennis stars Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna on Monday showing up a gritty performance swiftly entered into quarter finals after defeating their opponents in their respective matches in different categories at US Open which is being held in New York.
In the Women's Double, fourth seed Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Shuai Peng defeated the unseeded pair of Romanian Sorana Cîrstea and Spanish Sara Tormo by 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 in a tie breaker game in the pre quarter finals and easily stormed into quarter finals round. Earlier, Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng of China defeated the Slovak pair of Jana Cepelova and Magdalena Rybarikova by 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to enter in pre quarter finals round.
On the other side, in the Mixed doubles, French Open champions Rohan Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski also moved into quarter finals with a comprehensive win over American-Spanish combination of Nicholas Monroe and Maria Jose Martínez Sanchez by 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, Rohan Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski defeated the British-Finnish pairing of Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen by 6-4, 4-6, 13-11.
However, Indian contention in Men's doubles came to an end after Leander Paes and Purav Raja were defeated by Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev in a straight set by 4-6, 6-7.
Maria Sharapova, who made a comeback in a Grand Slam after serving a dope ban, was ousted in the 4th round by Anastasija Sevastova. In the Women Singles, 16th seed Latvian Anastasija defeated Sharapova, former number one, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. Also, two times US Open winner Venus Williams has reached the quarter finals.
