New Delhi, September 7: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) board has banned pizzas and burgers in college canteens. The AICTE said that eating of junk food could cause obesity in students and other illnesses.
“It is, therefore, suggested that institutions should regulate the food available in the canteen and around the institutions and ensure that junk food is not available to students in campus,” statement said.
It has also asked the institutes to regulate other food outlets around the campus to stop cooking and supply of junk food.
That is why this provision should be followed by engineering, pharmacy, nursing and management colleges. Cigarette, Gutka and Drugs have also been banned inside campuses.
In May 2012, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had directed all schools to ban junk food and carbonated drinks, calling them “rich in calories but deficient in vital nutrients”. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations in May 2012 and all schools were asked to implement this ban at the earliest.
