The history of Kumbh mela is as old as the creation of the universe legends. Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times every 12 years, the site of the observance rotating between four pilgrimage places on four sacred rivers: at Haridwar on the Ganges river, at Ujjain on the Shipra, at Nasik on the Godavari, and at Allahabad on the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical river Sarasvati.
A sacred bath at a predetermined time and place is the major event of this auspicious mela. A legend has it that by taking a dip in the holy Ganges on this event, one can be freed from all the sins of life. Some say it is the direct way to attain Moksha.
