Panaji, September 8: Complaint has been launched against Catholic Church Magazine in Goa for playing its role in a notorious way in Panaji by elections where Ex Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was contesting as a BJP candidate. The Goa and Daman Catholic Archbishop’s magazine Renewal or Novsornni or Renovocao has openly appealed to the voters to defeat BJP candidate Shri Manohar Parrikar.
The Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) has reached to the doors of the Goa State Election commission against Goa and Daman Catholic magazine for Paid News before Panaji Byelection in which Goa CM Manohar Parrikar had contested as BJP candidate. In the Catholic magazine, the author of the article had openly appealed for defeat of Parrikar, which is crime under Representative of People's Act- 1951
LRO says that as the Church is the religious body and powerful force in Goa, we suspect the article by Adv. FE Noronh in Catholic Church owned magazine is carefully published by paying the author of the article and financial incentives to the editor and owner of the magazine. In such case, it is a serious act of paid news under Representation of People's Act (RPA) 1951.
LRO has appealed the Goa election commission to investigate the matter to find out whether it was paid news and whether magazine and its owners received any quid pro quo financial incentives from rival parties for the said article.
LRO Chief Vinay Joshi has requested the Goa State Election Commissioner to order appropriate government department including state police intelligence, financial intelligence wings, any central investigation agency or whichever machinery capable of finding out financial transactions between magazine owners/ management and rival political parties in this matter.
