Athens, September 8: Young Indian grappler Sonam Malik on Friday shined in the World Cadet Wrestling Championship and made whole countrymen proud after winning a gold medal. Sonam Malik clinched medal in the 56kg category at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Athens, Greece. Neelam bagged bronze medal in the 43kg category.
As soon as Sonam and Neelam both won the medals, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore congratulated them for splendid performance in Cadet World Wrestling Championship. In a tweet, Minister Rathore hoped that they would keep the tricolor flying high.
The 15-year-old Sonam defeated Japanese Sena Nagamoto by 3-1 in the final of 56 kg category. She took a 2-0 lead in the first round and then conceded a point in the second round before creating a history by adding one more towards the end of the bout.
On the other side, Neelam settled for bronze in the 43kg category. She defeated Roxana Alexandra of Romania 6-4 in the bronze medal bout. Another Indian grappler Anshu will compete with Naomi Ruike of Japan in the 60 kg category on Saturday. Simran, Manisha, Minakshi, and Karuna will compete for the bronze medal with their opponents.
