New Delhi, January 22: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPM central committee has ruled out any form of electoral ties with the Congress party.

The committee rejected party general secretary Sitaram Yechury's draft resolution proposing an alliance with the Congress, on the concluding day of a three-day meeting in Kolkata yesterday.

The draft was defeated in voting by the Kerala delegation, led by politburo member Prakash Karat, which opposed any sort of direct or indirect alliance with the Congress.

Yechury said, the draft resolution will be released for discussion within the CPI(M) before the party Congress scheduled in April this year.

The Central Committee has said the main objective of the party is to “defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party” and it will focus on "mobilising all secular democratic forces” for that purpose.

To a question whether Congress will be among the secular democratic forces that his party is seeking to unite, Yechury said “Our effort will be to mobilise all the secular democratic forces and how that will be done will be decided at the time of elections. Appropriate electoral strategies will be undertaken which will ensure the maximum polling of votes against the BJP.”
