Anandiben Patel takes oath as Governor of Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, January 23: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has been sworn-in as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

 

Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Hemant Gupta administered the oath of office in a function at the Raj Bhavan in Bhopal on Tuesday.

Patel takes over from Gujarat governor Om Prakash Kohli who was given the additional charge as MP governor in September 2016 after the tenure of incumbent Ram Naresh Yadav ended.

76-year-old Patel was the first woman chief minister of Gujarat from 2014, when incumbent Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. She resigned from the post in August, 2016.

Patel hails from an agricultural family in Vijapur in Mehsana district in Gujarat. She had joined BJP as the president of BJP’s women wing in 1986. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1994. In 1998, she became the education minister and retained the portfolio after being re-elected in 2002 from Patan.
