Bengaluru, January 25: Karnataka is facing Bandh while today Bhartiya Janata Party Chief Amit Shah touched down Mysuru to address the people. Karnataka is witnessing a state-wide Bandh over the ‘Mahadayi River’ dispute.
What is ‘Mahadayi River’ dispute?
Mahadayi River also named as Mandovi River has sparked rage between Goa and Karnataka after Karnataka sought to get water for drinking purpose. Karnataka wanted to build dams across Kalasa and Banduri, the two tributaries of Mahadayi River. Karnataka wanted to route the river to Malaprabha basin.
But Goa opposed this demand as it contended that its population is dependent on the river’s natural path and diversion would affect its fragile ecosystem. It claimed that the ingress of saltwater in the river, which is dependent on monsoons, will ultimately end up killing the state’s mangroves and green belt. Also it will affect the agriculture production. The Mandovi is important for Goa as it is one of the smallest rivers of Indian and also it is one of the few sweet-water sources.
Pro-Kannadians staged protests demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the Mahadayi River dispute.
