Gujarat waives off electricity bills worth Rs 650 crore

Gandhinagar, December 19: Good news for the people of Gujarat, it has been decided to waive off Rs 650 crore pending non-payment of agricultural, residential or commercial power connection. State Power minister Saurabh Patel made this announcement in Gandhinagar. This decision was taken by the Gujarat government on Tuesday.


 

Minister Patel also announced that even after several amnesty schemes, these poor customers were not able to make payment of pending power bills, and therefore, the state government has decided to announce the one-time settlement.

"We had snapped electricity connections of over 6.20 lakh people from rural areas for not paying the energy bills in time. The amount of unpaid bills stands at Rs 625 crore. Now, our government has decided to waive this entire bill amount," he said.

"Under our one-time settlement scheme, consumers, can get back their power connection, be it agriculture, household or commercial, by paying just Rs 500. They will not be required to pay the outstanding dues, as the government has decided to waive it completely," he added.

It is to be noted that as many as 6.22 lakh power connection in rural Gujarat is non-functional for pending non-payment of bills in power theft cases. As per announcement, on payment of only 500 rupees, the entire pending sum of power bill and its interest will be waived.
