SC reserved judgment on the petition moved by CBI Director

New Delhi, Dec 6: The Supreme Court today reserved judgment on the petition moved by CBI Director Alok Verma, challenging the Centre's decision to divest him of all powers and sending him on leave.

 

Verma was sent on leave in October, along with his deputy CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, after the two leveled allegations of corruption against each other.

The bench, comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, sought to know why the government failed to consult a larger panel before taking action against the CBI officers. During the hearing, the Supreme Court said the government’s decisions should be taken in the interest of the institution.

In the interim night of 23 and 24th of October. Delhi police in the orders of the Central Vigilance Commission and the Government of India to seal the offices of CBI Director and Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana, the topmost officials of the CBI were ordered to go on leave till further nitice. The government appointed Joint Director Nageshwar Rao as the Interim Chief.
