Kolkata, February 13: Kolkata, the city with oldest Metro rail in India, is going to be blessed with the partial inauguration of East-West metro rail project. The East-West Metro will run from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium before Durga Puja this year. This will be India’s first underwater metro tunnel.

"Work will be completed by June, but it will take some more time to clear certain things and seek requisite permissions. We will try to start operations before Puja this year," Metro General Manager Ajay Vijayvargiya said on Monday. He also expressed very optimistic notion about the progress of the rest of project which is being estimated to be finished by next two years.

S

ervice up to another station Phoolbagan will take another three months. The ventilation system at Phoolbagan station is not ready yet, and other infrastructural installations including signaling and platform screen doors, escalators and elevators will take some more time.

Various reasons delayed the work including Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) late clearance for construction under heritage buildings in the Dalhousie area, a delay in getting approval for work in Defence-owned land in adjoining Esplanade which was not in hand of metro railway authority. The fare for the EW Metro will be higher in comparison to that of the Metro service that runs from Kavi Subhas (Garia) to Noapara.
