Kolkata, February 26: Citing to provide secure environment to the people of the correctional homes, the government of West Bengal has decided to relocate three correctional homes from Kolkata due to security reasons.
The West Bengal government has already given the go ahead nod to shift the Alipore Central Correctional Home to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, and is planning to relocate Presidency Correctional Home and Alipore Women’s Correctional Home as well.
Ujjal Biswas, Minister of Correctional Administration said that the three correctional homes are being relocated from the city as several high-rise buildings have come up around them, hampering security and surveillance.” He further added that the decision wasn’t too difficult to observe the correctional homes from these high-rises, which is “a serious security issue.
The main purpose of the correctional homes is to bring the inmates back to the mainstream in a secured environment. Due to rapid construction around these three facilities, that very purpose of security is being defeated. The State government is keen on relocating the Alipore Central Correctional Home to Baruipur by June 2018. The Alipore Central Correctional Home has a registered capacity of 1,971 inmates.
However, the Minister did not divulge where the Presidency Correctional Home and Alipore Women’s Correctional Home will be shifted.
