Maldivian Govt calls for all-party talks to handle the situation

Male, February 9: The emergency situation has led a disturbance in the peace of the Maldives. To handle the situation Maldives government has called for an all-party meeting.

Official statement of the Presidency of Maldives says “In view of the existing situation in the country, and the importance of All-Party Talks for the welfare of the people of the Maldives, the government has decided to reconvene All-Party Talks, and has issued invitations to all parties to engage in dialogue with the Government.”

Recently Maldives sent its envoys to some nations to give the updates on the situation and also to control the situation former president Mohamed Nasheed called India for the help and also asked US to stop all the financial transactions.

Supreme Court of Maldives ordered the release of Former President Mohamed Nasheed and eight others who were arrested on the terrorism grounds. This decision was opposed by President Yameen and he denied to abide the orders and declared the emergency in the country.


The unrest began in 2015 when Nasheed, the country's first democratically elected leader, was jailed on "terrorism" charges relating to the arrest of a judge during his tenure. The trial declared unfair by the UN, prompted widespread protests and resulted in the arrest of hundreds of dissidents.
