Toronto, April 24: All was not good for people on the Yonge Street in Toronto as a van plowed into a crowd of pedestrians on a sidewalk in two locations in Toronto on Monday afternoon, killing almost 10 people and injured 15 of them.

Deputy Police Chief Peter Yeun said that that they have taken the driver into custody and it is going to be a complex investigation. The suspect has been named by police as 25-year old Alek Minassian

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders claimed that the incident "definitely looked deliberate," though he would not call it an act of terror. He added that the motive was still unknown, and that police had no prior knowledge of the suspect.

Footage taken in the aftermath of the attacked appeared to show the suspect telling police to shoot him, and warning police that he was armed. Sighting the incident, Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale added that there was no indication the incident was related to national security.

Authorities say the suspect drove southbound on Yonge Street during the busy lunch hour, occasionally ploughing through the sidewalk and through northbound lanes. Photos from the scene showed benches and fire hydrants overturned, and bodies covered in tarps laying in the street.

Earlier similar incidents had taken place in the United States and Europe has seen a string of deadly attacks in which vehicles were used to mow down pedestrians.
