Railway launches its first Bridge Management System online to ensure an organized data on bridges

New Delhi, July 13: Timeliness and oozing productive outcome to the commuters have been the mantra of Indian Railways reclining quick action. On a similar note, the railways have now launched a web-based IT application that will enable to store data about the 1.5 lakh bridges.

 

The move came after the recent bridge collapsed in Mumbai on the railway track. To keep a watch on the liability of the bridges, the railways on Thursday launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System (IR-BMS) which is an IT application for bridges.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launched BMS for “meaningful integration, analysis, and dissemination of information related to various activities” about its bridges. The web-based platform will show the bridge master data, works data, information regarding inspection and monitoring and maintenance of the bridges and other essentials.

Piyush Goyal at the launch also felicitated artists whose work at seven railway stations across the country won them the top prize in railways in-house station beautification contest. This innovative competition was organized among zonal railways in December 2017.

Balharshah and Chandrapur railway stations in Maharashtra from the Central Railway were awarded the first prize while Madhubani station of the East Central Railway and Madurai station of Southern Railway were the co-winners of the second prize. Gandhidham station of the Western Railway, Kota station of the West Central Railway and Secunderabad station of the South Central Railway were joint winners of the third prize.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal felicitated the artists who participated in this initiative by giving them cash awards and appreciation certificates. The initiative involved wall art of paint and graffiti or local arts with the participation of local artists, private groups, and volunteers.

More than 62 stations across zonal railways were beautified under this initiative by operating skills of local artists, mostly using local art form, painting style, local themes or contemporary arts.

This initiative provided a forum for the expression of the emerging talents in the area and visibility of local art forms to the travelers. An evaluation committee of senior officials the railway's ministry was constituted to judge the entries of the stations who participated in this initiative.

The entries were evaluated on the basis of a number of criteria, including a depiction of local subjects, culture, themes, the overall harmony of art with the station colors, type of art form used, and quality of work done. As a token of appreciation, the prize-winning entries were awarded cash rewards Rs 10 lakh for the first prize, Rs 5 lakh for the second prize and Rs 3 lakh for the third prize.
