Ousted Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz sent to jail that is not less than 5-star hotel

Islamabad, July 14: Ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were arrested by Pakistani accountability officials on Friday.

 

Notably, Nawaz Sharif was with awarded ten-years imprisonment a case stemming from 2016 Panama Papers revelations that showed they owned the apartments through off-shore companies. While Maryam was convicted and awarded with seven-years imprisonment for concealing ownership of the apartments.

Nawaz and Maryam were arrested as soon as they reached Lahore amidst tight security. Hundreds of police officials were deployed on Lahore airport while thousand others were deployed in the central city of Lahore. Also, containers were placed along main roads to the block protesters from moving towards the airport where Sharif had arrived.


Mobile phone service was cut off by mid-afternoon, as Sharif's brother, Shehbaz, led around 10,000 supporters of his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on a march toward the city centre in defiance of a citywide ban on public gatherings.




Immediately after the arrest, Pakistani authorities Nawaz Sharif to Adiala jail and Maryam Nawaz to Sihala police rest house, which has been declared a sub-jail after the father-daughter arrived Lahore. The jail where the father-daughter duo was shifted looks like a 5-star hotel room.

A twitterati @JaunRazaElia in a tweet said, “This is super doper 7 star jail of nawaz sharif and Maryam nawaz, seems like match was fixed between PMLN and caretaker government , all drama done by arrests of PMLN worker and road block was to get sympathy.”


Before reaching Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif urged the people of Pakistan to stand with him and change the fate of the country. In a video message, tweeted by Maryam, ousted PM Nawaz Sharif said, "The country is at a critical juncture right now," adding "I have done what I could. I am aware that I have been sentenced to 10 years and I will be taken to a jail cell straight away. But I want the Pakistani nation to know that I am doing this for you."


Last week, Pakistan’s accountability court pronounced former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and son-in-law Captain Safdar guilty in the Avenfield corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the Supreme Court's directives in the landmark Panamagate verdict last year which deseated then PM Nawaz.

Nawaz Sharif was sentenced for 10 years, while his daughter Maryam Nawaz seven years, and Capt Safdar has been given 1-year prison term. Nawaj have also been handed a fine of 8 million pounds, while Maryam has been fined 2m pounds. They both deny wrongdoing and said they would appeal the court's decision.
