Tehran, July 23: Sunday brought a dreadful day for Iranians, as a series of the earthquake hit many parts of Iran. Over 300 people were injured after the earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit the mountainous western region of Iran. The temblor came hours after two quakes struck Hormozgan province in the southern region of Iran.

The first and second temblor measuring a magnitude of 4.6 and 5.4 respectively rocked the town of Ruydar, in Hormozgan province. However, in the afternoon, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocked an area in western Iran near the border with Iraq in Kermanshah province injuring over 300 people. Many houses in the region were damaged badly and the earthquake caused a landslide that temporarily shut down a local road.

Pirhossein Kolivand, the head of Iran’s emergencies and natural disasters agency said that at least 300 people were injured in the larger quake in western Iran. He added all the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. He did not mention if there were any deaths.

Importantly, Iran is prone to regular earthquakes as it sits on major fault lines. A magnitude 7.2 quake hit western Iran in November last year, killing more than 600. In the year 2003, a 6.6 magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 31,000 people.
