As Kerala weeps in incessant flood, Defense Ministry does an exemplary work with evacuating 300 stranded in #KeralaFlood

Thiruvananthapuram, August 16: Showing no remorse on the worsening condition of Kerala, the incessant rainfall continues to lash the beautiful state taking the death toll to 67 in just a week. Taking cognizance of the condition prevailing in Kerala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Defense Ministry to further step up relief and rescue operations across Kerala which is facing a severe flood situation.

 

With heavy rainfall, landslides caused heavy damages and death in northern districts, heavy flooding due to over flowing rivers submerged the districts in central Kerala. The Indian Coast Guard also has been on the right pace as amidst unabated rains that continue to lash several districts of Kerala, the rescue team evacuated 300 people including women children & senior citizens from flood hit areas of Cheriya Kanam village to safer places.

Updating the current situation of the Kerala Floods, the team is further augmenting the Rescue & Relief efforts to mobilize the available resources & deployed 6 teams with Gemini Boats across the flood hit areas of Ernakulam in Kerala this morning for helping the affected people.

The Centre assured providing all the possible support to the state with forwarding additional financial assistance of Rs 100 Cr. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also has directed the Union Minister of Tourism K J Aphons to rush to Kerala to coordinate with the rescue drive between the Centre & the State.

Having a telephonic conversation with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the prevailing flood situation in the state, Home Minister Rajnath Singh mentioned that the Centre is rushing additional NDRF teams to Kerala.

Landslides hit several places in Malabar apart from Wayanad and Idukki. Heavy rain continues in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts as well submerging low lying areas here.

Altogether, 34 dams have been opened and all the 44 rivers are overflowing. Since the water level in Mullaperiyar dam reached its maximum capacity of 142 feet, high have been issued in the area. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called up on his Tamil Nadu counterpart and asked to take urgent steps to reduce water in Mullaperiyar dam.
