New Delhi, January 10: A five judge bench of the Supreme Court today deferred the Ayodhya dispute involving the Ram Janmabhoomi case to 29th of January this year. The decision to defer the matter was taken after Justice U U Lalit withdrew from hearing following a conflict of interest being pointed out by the petitioners saying that he was a lawyer for Kalyan Singh in a contempt case related to Babri Masjid land case.
CJI Gogoi adjourned the case till the new bench was formed. The bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi along with justices S A Bobde, N V Ramana, U U Lalit and D Y Chandrachud, was slated to hear the pleas challenging the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court. The HC had earlier ruled that the 2.77 acre plot be divided equally into three parts between Ram Lalla, Nirmohi Akhada and Sunni Waqf Board.
Earlier, the matter was scheduled to be heard by a three judge bench headed by former CJI Dipak Misra. Citing the retirement of the CJI Misra, the successor heard the matter on 2nd of October last year. On 4th of this month, a bench headed by Gogoi decided that the matter would be heard by a three member bench of the SC. Later, on 8th, it was decided that the matter would be heard by a five-judge bench.
The hearing of the Ram Temple case assumes importance ahead of general elections 2019. The politically sensitive issue is central to BJP's poll promise on 2014. However, the Supreme Court had already cleared that no hearing was to take place today. Only date and schedule of hearing of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case were to be decided.
