Transgender clinics soon to be opened in all Govt medical colleges of Kerala

Kochi, September 11: Kerala has always been a pioneer for setting examples in justifying equality. After schools, employment, beauty pageant now transgender clinics will be opened in all the government medical colleges of the state.

 

The clinic will function on every first Tuesday of every month. A team of five doctors who are all specialists in separate fields, including general medicine, psychiatry, dermatology, endocrinology and plastic surgery, extend their services in the clinic. Also, one such clinic has already opened in Kottayam medical college and is functioning once a month for the time being. A statement released by the minister’s office says that all the departments of the hospital are coordinating well with the transgender clinic.

Apart from the clinics, the government also plans to start two surgical wings exclusively for the transgender community which would help in sex reassignment surgeries. The first wing will be set up in Kottayam medical college within a month.

As per the statement, the treatment will be free at the clinic and transgender persons will be given health cards. Some transgender volunteers will also be assigned in such clinics to offer legal help.

Apart from this, a paralegal volunteer will also be posted at these clinics to provide legal help for the community members. Three transgender persons have already been selected as legal volunteers.
