What a beautiful world it would be if people had hearts like animals? Ever imagined, they cannot talk like we humans do, cannot act, behave alike, but they do exist and gradually end up sharing with humans, the privilege of having a soul! Talking of animals on the World Animal Day today, here is a slated piece of a belief, to look at animals for them to see, to talk to them, for them to listen!
We humans, share this planet earth with animals and it is required that they are also provided with basic rights like us. Over a period of time, the rapid strides that human civilization has taken have resulted in causing detrimental effect on the lives of many animal species. However, evolution of human thought has also contributed to an understanding that even animals are sentient beings and their welfare is also of paramount importance.
Various human actions have lasting effects on the animal life, therefore it is important that we as humans own the responsibility to proactively work on improving the lives of the animals. India has traditionally been a culture which has engrained the philosophy of ethical treatment of animals. Some small reforms in such human actions can a more create a better influencial pattern in between the animals, humans being one of those!
Being observed on 4th of October every year across the globe, this day calls for an action of various causes related to animals including their rights, welfare, care and more. The day creates an opportunity to engage public in a discussion and create awareness on various issues like cruelty towards animals, animal rights violations.
The first observance of the said day is believed to be done by a German writer Heinrich Zimmermann. In spite of the initial idea to celebrate it on 4th October, which happens to be Saint Francis’s feast day, it was eventually celebrated on 24th March 1925 in Berlin due to challenges with the venue. Later in year 1931, the conference of International Animal Protection held in Florence, Italy, moved and approved a resolution to observe 4th October as the World Animal Day.
World Animal Day has been largely successful in creating awareness on the issues like cruelty on animals, ethical rights of animals, recognition of animals as sentient beings. It has now morphed into a globally recognized brand, which has created the platform for many animal welfare activists and organizations to propagate various issues relating to animals not only to a larger set of people, but also more effectively.
Afterall, love for animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all humans may connect in unison! Animals are here on the lands to be respected as citizens of mother earth. They are here to have their own freedom, their own family and their own life!
