Sowing seeds of sense: Over 2000 students pledge for clean environment at Good Air Summit in Delhi

New Delhi, November 13: In the wake of alarming level of rising air pollution in the northern part of the country, over 2,000 students today took the pledge to make environment greener and pollution-free at Good Air Summit in New Delhi.
 
Former Chairperson of National Green Tribunal Justice Swatanter Kumar administered the Good Air Pledge. Nearly, 800 delegates, 50 experts from all walks of life are participating in the Summit to share ideas and long-term solution needed to tackle the havoc of air pollution.
Describing students as the real India in fight against pollution, Justice Swatanter Kumar appealed them to rise to the occasion, saying, no government can do it better than the public and its participation is must for making cleaner environment.
“People must lead from the front and follow the basic rules to eliminate pollution, including reduction in power consumption, use of public transport, inclination to renewable and clean energy, plant at least 10 saplings in a year and educate 10 people on ways to achieve the goals in this direction,” he said. 
 
Initiated by the Integrated Health and Wellbeing Council, the main theme of Summit is 'Making India Breathe'. It is aimed at making the young children and citizens take responsibility for Good Air and bringing changes in the behaviour of individuals towards keeping society clean of pollutions. 
The 'Good Air Movement' is a nationwide drive that aims to cover Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Ahmedabad to Aizawl by 2025 to create mass awareness and mobilise public action towards good air goals as well as engage and educate 50 crore people, a statement from the IHWC said. The Indian Council of Medical Research estimates that air pollution caused one in eight deaths in India last year, besides lowering the average life expectancy by 1.7 years. As per reports, air pollution causes approximately seven million deaths every year globally.
