New Delhi, November 18: In a hotly contested presidential election held in Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the polls becoming the eight President of the island nation. Congratulating the newly elected President of the neighbouring country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes for winning the Sri Lankan presidential polls and said he looks forward to further deepen relations between the two nations.

In a tweet by PM Modi, he posted, “Congratulations @GotabayaR on your victory in the Presidential elections. I look forward to working closely with you for deepening the close and fraternal ties between our two countries and citizens, and for peace, prosperity as well as security in our region.”

Rajapaksa stormed to victory in Sri Lanka’s presidential elections, the results of which came on Sunday. Rajapaksa, 70, defeated Premadasa, 52, by more than 13 lakh votes. This is Sri Lanka's first election since the deadly terror attacks in April, when a series of bombs ripped through churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, killing at least 290 people and injuring hundreds.
