After the win, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain would leave the European Union on January 31. "We will get Brexit done on time by the 31st of January, no ifs, no buts, no maybes," Johnson told cheering supporters on Friday.

Johnson had campaigned on a promise to get Brexit done vowing to end years of political turmoil over Britain's future that has weighed on the economy and divided the nation.

Thursday’s poll was the fifth major vote in the country in less than five years including two previous general elections, European Parliament elections and the Brexit referendum a sign of how chaotic British politics have become.

A total of 3,322 candidates contested the 650 seats of Parliament this year. Britain's impending exit from the EU played a key role in the campaign this time.
