According to the official “Tokyo 2020” website, which also reports on details of the medal project, collection points have been set up throughout Japan to collect almost 79,000 tonnes of “material” in total, from about 6.1 million used mobile phones. Approx. 32 kg gold, 3,500 kg silver and 2,200 kg bronze were extracted from this material stock to produce the medals.

The approximately 5,000 medals in total have now been produced from the small electronic devices that were contributed by people all over Japan. The project to recycle small consumer electronics and our efforts to contribute to an environmentally friendly and sustainable society will become a legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Solar panels are installed underneath the surface of some roads in Tokyo. The metropolitan government announced its plans for "solar roads" as part of a campaign to make Tokyo a more eco-friendly city. The change is in part motivated by the fact that the city will imminently be hosting both the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

Also with this, Tokyo is going to transform the 2020 Olympics like this:

Powering the games with 100 % renewable energy: Wind and solar energy will lighten up the stadiums.

Driverless taxis for guests: Passengers will be able to use their smartphones to unlock the doors and pay their fares.

Robots will translate Japanese for foreigner guests: Guiding at all venues and supporting all foreign languages. Also carrying bags for the disabled guests and elder people.
