IPL auction 2020: Fetching Rs 15.50 crore bid, Pat Cummins becomes most expensive player

Kolkata, December 20: The player auction for the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) took place in Kolkata on Thursday. Pat Cummins, with a base price of two crore rupees, became the most expensive overseas buy as he was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping 15.50 crore rupees.

62 players, including 29 overseas, were sold on Thursday with total spending of Rs 140.3 crore. Only 4 teams managed to fill up the full quota of 25 players. Australian and West Indian cricketers featured among the most expensive purchases following an intense bidding war between the eight franchises.Cummins is also the second-most expensive purchase ever, behind Yuvraj Singh's Rs 16 crore bid by Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) ahead of the 2015 edition.
 
Glenn Maxwell was sold to Kings XI Punjab for 10.75 crore rupees while Aaron Finch was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 4.4 crore rupees. Yusuf Pathan remained unsold while India's Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara also failed to find any bidders in Kolkata.
 
 
 
England captain Eoin Morgan will be playing for KKR in the upcoming IPL season as he was bought by KKR for 5.25 crore rupees. Robin Uthappa, who was released by KKR, has been bought by Rajasthan Royals for 3 crore rupees.
 
Dale Steyn, Adam Zampa and Colin De Grandhomme failed to attract any bidders at the auction while Piyush Chawla signed for 6.75 crore rupees by Chennai Super Kings.
 
Another big buy at the auction was South African Chris Morris, who was sold for Rs 10 crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore. West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell, with a base price of Rs 50 lakh, fetched a winning bid of Rs 8.50 crore from Kings XI Punjab.
 
 
 
The IPL auction is an annual event held before the start of each season where teams buy players who sign central contracts. The players get around 75 percent of the auction price - effectively their salary for the season - while the rest goes to their national board.
