The issue of CAA has been a major flashpoint in Bengal politics, with Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee declaring that it will not be implemented in the state. The state had witnessed violent protests and arson against the CAA and the proposed nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) during December 13-17.

Large amount of people came down on streets supporting the massive rally. Coming down on streets, the TMC supremo and WB CM Mamata Banerjee last Monday administered a pledge to people not to allow any National Register of Citizens exercise and implementation of the new citizenship law (CAA) in the state leading a huge protest rally against the controversial law and the NRC. The BJP West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh had alleged that TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee is playing a "double game" and wondered why eight Trinamool Congress MPs were not present when the Lok Sabha voted and passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on December 9.
