The Central Government scheme will promote Panchayat led ground water management and behavioural change with primary focuses on demand-side management. Union Cabinet approved the 6,000 crore rupees scheme yesterday. It will be implemented over a period of 5 years in identified areas in Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The condition of ground water in more than 8,300-gram panchayats in 78 districts of these seven states is very worrying. Its people have to bear the huge brunt of it. People should get rid of these problems, to improve the water level, we have to conduct awareness campaigns.

He said that before the election, when we talked about the Ministry of Water Power dedicated to water, some people felt what a promise. But very few noticed why it was needed. The Ministry of Water Power pulled out the water from this Compartmentalized Approach and we stressed the Comprehensive Approach. In this monsoon, we have seen how extensive efforts have been made for water conservation on behalf of the society, from the Ministry of Water Power

PM Modi also said that another request of mine is that people of every village make a water action plan, create a water fund. In your village, water related schemes come under many schemes. Comes from MLA and MP's funds, comes from Central and State schemes.

On the occasion, the Strategic Tunnel under Rohtang Pass was also named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The historic decision to construct a strategic tunnel below the Rohtang Pass was taken on 3rd June in 2000 when late Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister.

The foundation stone for the Access Road to the South Portal of the tunnel was laid on 26th of May 2002. The cabinet approved four thousand crore rupees for this. The 8.8-kilometre long tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometres.
