New Delhi, March 16: Continuing with the blog series named ‘Agenda 2019’ abide the Lok Sabha elections, Finance Minister staunchly placed his opinion, digging at the Congress party in opposition. “The impact of such parties on politics, policy & governance has been quite adverse coupled with their capacity to make a difference in the arithmetic of coalition politics. Family owned parties compromise ethics in public life, leading to fall in ethical standards of governance”, he said on Friday.
“In the changed Indian political scenario, the dynastic parties cadres owed loyalty only to the charismatic leader. In most cases the leader amassed wealth & the party functioned like a personal property of the family & the Party became a crowd around the dynastic family”, he added further adding that 2014 LS elections echoed realisations of aspirational India that it is only men of merit, competence & integrity matter & not the membership of a family.
Referring to the historical facts, Jaitley opined that the seeds to convert India into a dynastic democracy were sown by Pt. Nehru who ignored a galaxy of tall national leaders of the Congress Party & started grooming his daughter Smt. Indira Gandhi as his successor. “He made her the Congress President ahead of many other seniors”, he said.
“The real strength of democracy will be realised when myth of dynasties is finally buried and these parties are taken over by men of competence and merit. That will provide Indians with a choice”, he said.
“Most families where a single dynast created the party, have moved into the next generation. In the next generation, there may be more than one heir. Both the heirs become aspirational and, therefore, the parent dynast distributes the largesse. But recent history has proved otherwise. One failed and the other won’t take-off”, he signed off adding that although the congress believes two owners to be better than one, there can be only one emperor on Earth.
