Its raining gold and silvers for India; Marimuthu, Tajinder Singh Toor clinch gold while Shivpal Singh grabs silver

Doha, April 23: Dream of achieving big, hours of rigorous training, eyeing on the ultimate goal by wrapping itself with the national flag, India positively runs towards success. on the second day of the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships, it was raining gold and silver for the champions. Tajinder Singh Toor bagged the gold medal in the men's Shotput while Shivpal Singh won the Silver medal in Men's Javelin Throw with a throw of 86.23.

The winning streak for the day started by Gomathi Marimuthu who ran a personal best in the 800m for a gold. Gomathi ran the race of her life, one with a smart strategy too, as she fought her way from the back of the pack and shocked the field to take the women’s 800m honors. It is the 30-year-old Tamil Nadu athlete’s first major gold.

 

Another gold made its way after Asian Games champion Tajinder Pal Singh Toor, the favorite, secured the men’s shot put gold with an opening-round throw of 20.22m, his best this season.

 

Surprising all, javelin thrower Shivpal Singh produced a huge 86.23m effort that fetched him the men’s silver. Shivpal’s effort was nearly four meters more than his previous best of 82.56m that came at last month’s Federation Cup at Patiala. It also made the 23-year-old the second best Indian in the event, after Neeraj, the Asiad and Commonwealth Games gold medallist who pulled out with an elbow strain.

 

M. P. Jabir and Saritaben Gayakwad, in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles, returned with bronze after impressive performances. Jabir’s hurdles bronze came in a personal best 49.13s while Saritaben, who clocked 57.2s, was engaged in a fighting finish that pushed her from fourth to third.

Raising the bar for all, the Indian athletes have surely marked a remarkable presence on the international platform.
