Guwahati, May 16: Helping each other is a human nature and it truly signifies the essence of humanity before religion. Off lately, there have been many instances where communal brotherhood has been quite evident in the society. Signifying the same communal bonding, a Muslim auto-driver went a step ahead by defying the curfew in Assam to help a pregnant woman reach hospital on time.

The Hailakandi district in Assam was in a state of lock down when clashes broke out after passerby pelted stones at Muslims offering prayers along a busy road. The pregnant woman Nandita Das went into a labour pain and was needed to be shifted to hospital. The city was under curfew and the streets were deserted. No ambulance was available to take her to hospital.

Nandita’s husband made frantic calls for seeking help as his wife was in extreme pain. Nandita's village Rajyeswarpur Part I was 12-km away from SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi and no auto or cab or taxi driver was willing to take the risk to take the woman to hospital. This is when Rubon's Muslim neighbour Maqbool Hussain Laskar came forward to help and brought his auto to take the woman to hospital.

Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner, Keethi Jalli, has praised Maqbool Hussain for his valour. He said the country needs more such example of Hindu-Muslim unity. Driving past damaged buildings and vehicles after last Friday clashes, Maqbool was able to reach hospital on time and admitted Nandita to hospital. The woman delivered a baby boy.

Highlighting another communal brotherhood, a Hindu family in Assam gifted a land for Muslim burial ground.
