Marking birth anniversary of a prince who sacrificed everything to teach non-violence, peace, compassion and service to humanity ‘Lord Buddha’

Mumbai, May 18: A prince who left his home in search of peace and meditated for 49 days continuously is the 4th largest religion in the world. Buddha, also known as ‘The Awakened One’ or ‘The Enlightened One’ embarked on his beautiful journey to self-discovery after he witnessed human suffering in the world. As the world today celebrates Buddha Purnima to mark his birth anniversary, it is also that today he attained Nirvana under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.


 

Buddha preached many sutras, mainly Hinayana and Mahayana. Hinayana is referred to the original teachings of Buddha by meditating while Mahayana believes in idol worship and mantras. At a very young age, Buddha lived in the lap of luxury but at the age of 29, he left his kingdom to search answers in the quest about the world. Years later, he achieved self-discovery and was named ‘Buddha’.

In Bihar, Buddha Purnima is being celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety. The main function has been organized at Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under pious Bodhi tree.

President Ram Nath Kovind, while greeting people said, “The values of non-violence, peace, compassion and service to humanity embodied in the teachings of Lord Buddha have profoundly influenced human history and the course of civilization.”

 

In his message, the Vice President said that on this happy occasion, let us commit ourselves to the path of Dharma (righteousness), Karuna (compassion) and Maitri (universal friendship) shown by Lord Buddha.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the people on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. In a tweet, he said, Greetings to all countrymen on Buddha Purnima. The Messengers of Truth, non-violence, mercy, compassion and Peace Lord Buddha's great message will continue to inspire the countrymen.
