Pledging to fight against terrorism, UGC asks universities to observe May 21 as Anti-Terrorism Day

New Delhi, May 21: Terrorism is one of the most disturbing issues of the world today. To take a pledge to fight against this growing monster, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all its affiliated universities and higher educational institutions to observe 21 May as Anti- Terrorism Day.

 

As per the letter by UGC to Vice-Chancellors, Every year 21 May is celebrated as Anti-Terrorism Day in India to wean away from the youth from terrorism and its clutches of violence by underscoring the sufferings of the people and stressing on how it is prejudicial to the national interest.

UGC also suggest some activities for the celebration of the day like debates, discussions, symposium, pledge taking ceremony and screening of the films.

Further, the UGC letter stated, “you are requested to kindly observe the 'Anti-terrorism day' in your university and in your affiliated colleges on May 21, 2019. You should accordingly organize appropriate programs suggested by the Ministry of Home Affairs”.

The Anti-Terrorism Day is celebrated on 21 May every year in the memory of the former prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on the same date in 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
