India’s political leadership to shift gears; 16th Lok Sabha officially dissolved with Prez Kovind's consent

New Delhi, May 25: With big electoral victory for Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party, it is time for India’s political leadership to shift gears and turn on their governance lens. With the Union Cabinet ministers meeting on Friday, a resolution for dissolving the 16th Lok Sabha was passed. The President Ram Nath Kovind signed the order accepting the advice made by the cabinet on recommendation to this effect.

The process to constitute 17th Lok Sabha will soon begin as President Kovind signed the order in exercise of the power conferred upon him as per Article 83 (2) of the Indian Constitution. Three members of the Election Commission headed by Sunil Arora called on President Kovind and handed over the list of the newly elected members of the Parliament constituting the 17th Lok Sabha.

The Election Commission submitted a copy of the notification in terms of Section 73 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951. This contains the names of Members elected to the House of the People, following General Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha.

The President appreciated the efforts taken by the Election Commission to adhere to the norms and conduct a successful electoral process. Extending regards, Prez Kovind appreciated all the members of the Election Commission, its officials and members of its staff, other public officials, police and security personnel, for working tirelessly and diligently to uphold the sanctity of the people’s ballot, and a free and fair election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday submitted his and his union council resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind. Holding talks with his council members, PM Modi discussed in detail to form a new cabinet to tackle a stuttering economy and other challenges facing his second term after winning a big majority. Accepting the resignation, President Kovind however requested Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP has retained power in the lower house of the Parliament for the second consecutive term, with a bigger mandate than 2014. The coalition won as many as 350 seats out of the total 542 seats in the Lok Sabha, crossing its previous tally of 336 seats in the last elections held in 2014.
